Bill grew up in a small, predominantly Irish town in New England. About thirty-five years ago he came to West Cork with his wife and young child and set up a small market garden, supplying vegetables to the local shops. Over the years this evolved into the establishment of a large Garden Centre in Skibbereen. During this time Bill also got involved in many other pursuits such as the creation of Earthwatch, the first nationally based environmental organization, and the Irish Natural Forestry Foundation (INFF).
Bill on Humanism:
“I came to really appreciate Humanism through a realization that the major rituals of the traditional community have, in many cases, become inappropriate and dated. Humanism celebrates the joy and fun of marriage and birth, and it offers a proper respect and dignity for the ending of life. I particularly appreciate the Humanist lack of dogma and creed; we can create the sort of celebration which seems most appropriate to us and which will reflect who we really are. The only limit is your imagination.”
